It was 2010. I was grappling with the "why" of personal photography after two hard years of commercial doldrums brought on by the collapse of the creative economy.
At a baby shower yesterday a fellow swimmer, Patty, who is a book editor asked me about the blog. She fished around for an example of what I valued in the blog.

ReplyDeleteYes, photography is, or should be about connection, not 'self-expression'. It is for me anyway and because it can be exploitive in some situations, I moved away from photojournalism early in my life.

ReplyDeleteVery powerful article. I think most of us who haven't lived in a box have experienced similar situations. Heart wrenching. I could probably find something similar within 5 miles of my home. Many people have lost the ability to have empathy and reach out to those that might make them uncomfortable. It's not even us-vs-them anymore, it's just US ........
ReplyDeleteThings haven't changed in Russia and infact have gotten worse since Putin has stolen close to 50 trillion dollars from his own people. A must read is a book called "Red Notice" by Bill Browder. Putin hates this man more than anyone else on the planet. Why? Because he figured out what Putin was doing and exposed his frauds.

Wow. That might indeed be your best blog post. How do we (you, I and all) get back to that place of seeing with empathy? Those discoveries are hard to come by in familiar and comfortable circumstances.
