Why I still write a blog. Why you should be interactive with your favorite blogger...even if it's not me. "Re-Printed" from MJ's blog from October 2011. Amusing how the internet time machine works...

I wrote this post for Michael Johnston's "The Online Photographer" blog back in October of 2011. While MJ recently referred to me as a "gadfly" I still like him. And I still read his stuff on a near daily basis. This particular blog post is the long form of why I like his blog, why I'm glad it still survives and why you should be more vocal in your support.

The original of this is here: https://theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/the_online_photographer/2011/10/kirks-take-kirk-tuck-1.html  go there if you want to see how it (visually) first appeared and also to read the 140+ comments that resulted from its publication. And to say, "Hi. And Thank You!" to Mike

  1. Hi Kirk, thank you for this and for your blog. You are right about the morning routine, that's me; and I'm pleased to see that you were not drinking coffee out of a paper cup in 2011. BTW I really like some of your recent posts. I would be really interested to know some history of that old workshop covered in graffiti, it reminds me of the engineering workshop where I started work 60 odd years ago - they don't make them like that nowadays.

  2. I definitely get your point. There is one social media site I am thinking of deactivating my account at. My issue with it? Rarely any feedback or acknowledgment from any “friends/followers”. I suspect that some of it is due to people not logging in as often as they used to. For all its faults, I can start a thread on DPR and get some acknowledgment in minutes. On that note, I will continue to leave comments here while this bold remains active. I do very much appreciate what you post here.

  3. Long time reader, infrequent commenter, except on Instagram. I started reading your blog years ago, when my interest in photography was reigniting. Came across it by chance while searching for Olympus reviews. When the pandemic hit, I have to say you helped me get through it with your engaging and optimistic posts. And, you've spurred my creativity continually. Thank you. (TOP is cool, but I don't shoot pool...!).

  4. I applaud your efforts and hope you will continue. So nice to be able to read intelligent prose that is both interesting, challenging and instructive. MJ's blog is well written but for the most part I'm not part of his family. Many still are and I'm thankful he provides that connection. I live in the here and now, not the good old days 40 or 50 years ago. I find VSL relevant and insightful, TOP not so much, but sometimes entertaining.

I'm currently enjoying life in Mexico away from Agent Smith and his orange monkey. People are happy, food is plentiful, prices are low, sanity prevails.

  5. I've been reading your blog for years and have commented infrequently. I see that you have regular commenters to whom you always reply but my always insightful comments (grin) largely go unnoticed it seems. From that I inferred that you weren't too terribly interested in comments, since you can gauge your popularity by the number of clicks you receive. So let me go on record as saying that I look forward to your blog posts and look for them every day, even though I hate swimming. But I actually do like mannequins so I find a balance there. I'm almost 80 and do photo walks around town here in Fort Collins, CO, often with a friend, and we refer to them as KT walks. A few years ago I took inspiration from you and began asking strangers to do their portraits and now I almost always get a yes. I've noticed in recent years that you have tapered off doing those types of consensual (as opposed to candid) street portraits and I'd like to see you go back to doing more of them. Maybe a 50/50 mannequin to human portrait ratio. Hahaha. But thanks again for your blogs. I found it mildly dispiriting when you took your sabbatical a few months ago.

    1. Thanks. I do enjoy the comments. And I don't really care about the clicks. Appreciate you posting!
