Some color images from the 2021 Road Trip.

Fun times here in VSL H.Q. The CFO ordered a new computer and is looking forward to experiencing the speed of a fast, M4 processor. I couldn't resist a bargain so I ordered a slightly used Leica D-Lux 8 and a smattering of accessories and am now just lingering in the office to get the tracking number from the shipper. The weather was cool and sunny for our walk this morning and everything seems okay. But maybe that's because we've resisted checking in on the equity markets today...

I had a blast out photographing on S. Congress yesterday and am also trying to post some fun images later this afternoon. Don't tell me about the markets. It will ruin the surprise!!!

Taking a few hours off to read a book. Kinda fun. Kinda last century. But first?

  1. Kirk: . . . I ordered a slightly used Leica D-Lux 8. . .

I recently popped for a D-Lux 8 after discovering the company had designed its handling characteristics—physical controls and menu structure—to emulate those of the Q3. As far as I'm concerned, the latter has the most congenial ergonomic attributes of any camera I've used since the film SLR era.

Physical controls: yes. But the menu structure was a disappointment. It's at best an approximation of the one on the Q series. It's possible the camera doesn't have the memory capacity or processing cycles to match its bigger sibling exactly, but I would be surprised if Leica's firmware developers couldn't have come somewhat closer with a few coding tweaks. Also, I find its slow start-up and shutdown quite irritating (although that probably is a product of hardware constraints. Still, it's more pleasant to use than a couple of older Canon all-in-one cameras that I tote around when I don't want to carry an interchangeable-lens camera; the 24-75mm equivalent zoom range is about right for that purpose; and the image quality is more than adequate for online display and even small prints. As I get older and more irritable, I find my taste in cameras increasingly is influenced by how pleasant I find them to shoot with.
