Almost all my portrait shooting has been square. I even played around briefly with an APSC lens on the Sony A7Riii using the "native" square crop.
Now, instead of saying I was inspired by Instagram, I can say I was inspired by Kirk Tuck.
Neither is technically true, though. I was inspired by a portrait that I saw long ago. I hate to sound obvious, but I think it was Dorothea Lange, (who rarely cropped her photos as ordinary squares.) But when it works, it really works.
My favorite of those is the last one. I assume that is your favorite as well.
Do you consciously organize your images or is it instinctive? There's always some counterfoil in the background that plays off against the main subject that adds depth and strength to the image. LOVE IT!! LOVE IT!! LOVE IT!!
These are fabulous; I love them. I especially like frame no. 5, where a young couple is engrossed by each other and on the left, a lady is very grumpy about her ice cream cone. Are these all 6x6 negatives? I do not see the Hassellad v-shape tic marks on frames 1 to 5.
The fifth frame is amazing-the intimate couple with a girl who looks like, but probably isn’t, the odd one out. And, forgive me, but the woman in the last frame looks like she’ll still be a vest-pocket hottie when her hair turns white!
