VSL Reader, Ron White, asked to see some of the photos from Montreal that I took with my iPhone. Glad to oblige.

amazed that Canada still has pay phones!!!d

All of these images were done with an iPhone XR which is about a zillion generations old and has only a fixed 26mm lens. I have several apps such as Filmic Pro and Halide on it. Both can shoot in raw -- I think. I just use the software that comes native on the phone. These are all untouched and right out of the phone's camera. The files are nice but seem just a little "thin" to me.

Hope this is useful. I mostly used the phone to make images in the Jean Talon open air market.
it was easier.

  1. Excellent Kirk, Thank You. I'm amazed how far and quickly the iPhone's camera capabilities have come.
(FYI - I started my photography adventure in our home darkroom with my Dad teaching me film processing and print making - in 1948. It's been a great journey.)

  2. One of these days, someone is going to prank the public by installing a phone booth somewhere that consists of an iPhone chained to the wall.

Or maybe not a prank but instead a wall-mounted iPhone that you have to put a quarter or a loonie (a Canadian $1 coin) into a slot that turns on the power for 10 minutes.

I grew up in Montreal, lived there till I was 22. Had I remained, I would probably have never owned a car. You can get anywhere important faster by public transport there. I'd only rent a car when travelling out of town. I don't want to think about all the money I would have saved and all the rush hour life-sapping aggravation I could have avoided. Why does it take so long to figure out what's important.

I am going to have to try out that Café Crew place.

  3. Robert. All fun thoughts. I was so amazed to find phone booths everywhere! Put one up in Austin and it would be vandalized in a heartbeat. Would love to live in a city with great public transportation. I'm just not in a rush anymore. And the walk to the stations would be good for all of us.

My kid is heading to Tokyo at the end of the month for a two week vacation. I can't wait to hear about how the Japanese have transportation figured out. Should be interesting.

    Thanks!

  8. No doubt the cell phone photos are all most people would ever require for sharing or to make reasonably small prints for framing. I have given my son 3 cameras over the past several years. He Might use them if I am there visiting, otherwise it’s his cell phone. He returns the cameras or gives them away. And your photos here of the vegetables and fruits. Plenty of detail, snappy colors. Quite possibly adequate to cover a box truck. I am content to use my cameras because I am an oldster, I like to mess with them and the myriad legacy lenses from my storeroom; it's an avocation. But I am aware that I often don’t get better images from them than the very compact and sufficient phones that virtually everyone has.
