I'm sure you've seen this a thousand times but I never get tired of watching it.

Problem is that it's so close to home that when I watch it I laugh and then, when it's over I realize that it parallels the reality of business so closely in our field that I cry and then eat a carton of Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia ice cream. I think there's a secret workshop company that goes around the country and teaches people in big businesses to ask for much more of everything than they are willing to pay for.
The only part they left out is, "We can't pay you any money but this will really look great in your book.."
"Oh gosh!" I reply, "I've run out of space in my portfolio for additional photos of overweight, balding white guys in suits."

You're right. I've seen this I dont know how many times. It still makes me cry. Having spent the last 20 years selling things that I made with my own two hands, all I can say is that ALL of those interactions happen way too often. The insulting part is that it insults ME not just what I made/make.
Thanks for posting this Kirk. Nice to know it hits home for you too. Some part of me would like to imagine that all of your clientele are above this sort of thing.

This great! Unfortunately true. As I am new to the photography business I haven't had any interactions such as this but I am waiting for it. It's sad that we have to haggle for our own product.
What is especially ironic is that often, the people always who try to low ball others become indignant when the same is done to them.
As an overweight balding white guy, I find that stereotype as worn as any. Many of my worst customers are women, and many are of other ethnic backgrounds.
Point taken, Curt. I guess that's neither sensitive nor really correct anymore. I'll find a newer and better stereotype. The world would be a great place if we were all perfect and cute and never grew old......
