Documenting tradition with a snapshot taken with the Sony Nex 7.

Family traditions: Every year, at the start of school in the Fall, I take a snapshot of Ben at the front door, heading off to school.  This will be his junior year at high school. He is now on the varsity cross country team and he's a really good student. He shoots (mostly video) with a Sony a57 camera and a small handful of lenses. He uses a Gitzo tripod with an offset center column and a Manfrotto fluid head. He edits in Final Cut ProX.

I took my very amateur snapshot with a Sony Nex 7 and the kit lens.

It's the start of what I hope will be another great year!

Thanks for reading the blog.

Kirk

Snapshot photos like that are truly treasured 20 years later. A series of "first day of school" snapshots are priceless. When they end up in Ben's granchildren's hands, they will be amazed!

I was hoping he'd be able to use them well when he runs for president....

I once wrote to a friend that no perfect 'fine art' shot or perfectly-lit landscape can ever mean as much to someone as a good picture of their kid. This is a nice reminder and a lovely shot. Mostly, though, good luck to Ben. It may not mean much to him that legions of Visual Science Lab readers are wishing him well for another school year, but we are.

For a 'very amateur shot', the lighting is very fortunate. The shadows of the door are opened just enough, and there's this nice hint of sunrise on the upper right. All lucky timing and exposure, I am sure.

We had this tradition too. With the youngest starting college this year out of state it just wasn't the same not taking the photos.

Every year, from kindergarten through their freshman year in college, we would go out to breakfast as a family.

Never missed a year.

Hi Nick, we have a tradition of going out somewhere really nice for dinner the evening before. We celebrate the end of summer and talk about what's ahead. It's so nice to have traditions.

I love this pic, and his handsome and open smile, I can see the kindness, smarts, and a little mischief right there. Wish him a great school year from the vsl readers !

Nice tradition - oh and I'm glad that Captcha is gone. Hard to read even for humans...

Nice tradition. I hope they find a better way to filter out spam soon. I dislike captcha, but it is a part of the landscape.

Kirk, I have the same tradition as you. I've been taking first day of school photos of my three kids since they started kindergarten and snapped my daughter heading off to high school as a freshman this morning with my Nikon V1. These are priceless.

It seems like a lot of people do the first day of school picture. We have been doing it for 11 years now. My oldest daughter is now a freshman in highschool. We took the pictures yesterday in front of the same tall bookcase - one of each girl, the two girls together and the two girls and their mom, all in bare feet. The best part of all the pictures is to see how the kids have grown over the years!
Great shot! Now if I could only get my oldest to at least pretend to smile.....
