  2. I think so Mike. It's a nice place to share quick phone photos but you can also share your big camera photos. And it can be a fun place to look at other people's photos as long as you curate which feeds you like.

And it's free. And pretty much ad free. And, if you don't "follow" anybody's political feeds it can be a respite from politics...

  3. Thanks, Kirk. In my mid-70's, I'm just getting started on Instagram at the suggestion of my kids who are pretty Instagram savvy. At this pointing my life, it seems to be the best way to get my work out there.

It is quite fun, but I don't post as often as I would like.

  5. Thanks KT I am a retired Investment banker trying to make my way through the world of photography. I have had a instagram account for several years and I really like it. No politics just pictures. Love looking at others images and love for others to see mine. Here is my account.https://www.instagram.com/photodog28/.

  6. Good idea for a share. It's a fun platform for the most part and I don't take it too seriously. Sometimes I post a photo or a selfie.

    My username is: crsantin

Say hi if you are in the mood.

  7. If you want to post from your computer, are on a Mac and use Safari you can access Instagram and use it like you would the app on your phone. In Safari, go to the "Develop" section of your tool bar at the top of the screen (File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Develop, etc.) When you click on Develop you'll see the choice (second down) to change the "User Agent". When you click that you'll see "Safari XXX iPhone." If you change to that you'll get an Instagram window that works like the phone and allows you to upload from stuff you already have sitting around. Just change back when you finish so your Safari goes back to looking like you think it should...

  8. I'm working remotely with a couple of students this term and I've been pushing them to work, so I'm pledged to put a photo on IG each morning, usually something I've shot within the past few days but when that well runs low, then it's something I'm making a big print of at that time. Many thanks for the instructions for how to do this straight from the Mac; I've been using PhotoTransfer to get them to my iPad and thence to IG. I was pretty sniffy about social media but my curator spouse pushed me to start using it a few years ago.
    My account is gregheins.

  9. Here's my personal IG -- caution, cat pics ahead --

    www.instagram.com/j.r.sprawls/

This is where I keep up with old friends, mostly from my newspaper and pro photographer days. We're almost all retired now and scattered all over the world, but this keeps us a little bit in touch. Plus I find a few interesting new photographers and artists to follow -- and have made a couple of new friends even.

  10. I really like it, because the fairly low resolution, and general lack of gear talk, means you have no choice but to focus mostly on the images themselves. As opposed to (say) Flickr where you can get hung up on pixel peeping, looking up shots taken with particular gear etc.

    I am coffeecat_photo

  11. I used to poo poo it but have accepted it as a nice place that forces me to concentrate on making something fun without a care about how it looks at three feet across. https://www.instagram.com/krummj/ (or click name).

  24. Thanks for this, and for your steady stream of entertaining posts.

I've been intending to set up an account for a while, so you gave me the push I needed.
    https://www.instagram.com/crabtree_errant/

Now if I can just figure out how to keep Instagram from cropping my photos I can start posting. I've got the idea now from much reading, but don't seem to have any application on my new iMac or my iPhone that can accomplish it.

  25. Yep, pretty much ad free; for a while. I've had an account for a little over three years now. It was great at first and, as you say, almost ad free. Now, the second post is an ad and then every fourth post after that is an ad. Same with the stories. Pretty soon, you'll be scrambling for your volume control (ad sounds do not necessarily abide by your volume settings) and learning when to flip quickly because you know the next one is going to be an ad.

I'm on mostly to follow and share with family and friends. A fun account I recently discovered, though, is: https://www.instagram.com/shelterinplacegallery/

  26. One thing i should have added is there are a lot of well known photographers who post on Instagram. To name just a few who I follow, Teju Cole, Stephen Shore, Cindy Sherman. Todd Hido, and Martin Parr as well as museums and galleries like Aperture, MOMA NY, Tate Modern, MichaelHopppen Gallery, The Photographers Gallery, Magnum, and so many more. Whatever style of photography you’re into, there are people to learn from and about to follow.

  27. There is actually a lot of great stuff on Instagram if you know where to look. One of the tricks to finding great photographers and artists is to check out the profiles of the accounts you like. For example, if you like Mr Tuck’s work, look at his profile and click on “Following” to see a list of who he is following. You can then see who Mr Tuck likes and check out their work. Look at their profiles and see who they are following, and repeat.
Instagram also allows multiple accounts. I have a private account for sharing with family and friends and a public account to share with the world. Here is my public account https://www.instagram.com/williamjns/ I’m not much of a photographer, more of a camera guy and I enjoy sharing my collection and connecting with other camera geeks.

  28. Kirk, I've always enjoyed your blog for your great images and your writing style, please keep it up.

Also, very sorry to hear of Studio Dog's passing....we have our own "studio dog" too and I can't imagine that prospect.

I will take you up on your offer of posting my Instagram. I post only my version of "Fine Art Imagery" hoping to snag a sale or two. Please check it out if you have the time and let me know what you think.

Also check out my wife's sculptures at: https://www.instagram.com/tamaeframe/

We're both currently "starving artists", as I'm sure a lot of artists are now at this time.

    Take care and be safe.

  29. Hi Kirk, I've enjoyed your blog for a long time, you and TOP are my everyday reads. I'm now following your Instagram account too!

Instagram is my only "artistic" outlet at the moment. I've really come to enjoy shooting on my phone and editing in Snapseed, which is an amazing app considering that it's free. I'm at https://www.instagram.com/dickcon8/.

Back in the good old days (about 6 weeks ago) I used to meet up with two other photo buddies and we'd explore the lesser known parts of London (UK), often using the books "London's Hidden Walks" as our guides. We ruthlessly edit the pictures (a process in which no egos are left unbruised) and produce Blurb books and zines. Our group account is at https://www.instagram.com/collectivizm_ldn/.

I'm looking forward to when the lockdown is lifted so we can all meet up again. I miss the company and the exercise.

A tip for any Windows users out there - you can post direct to Instagram from your computer by logging in to your account, then right click and select "Inspect". Then hit F5. This should bring up the buttons that allow you to post as you would from your phone.
