A happy, healthy New Year to one and all.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering if you ever explained how you came
up with the title "The Visual Science Lab" of your
blog? Am I the only one wondering?
Thank you for a most informative, entertaining blog.
Hi. Thanks for asking! I had just completed my first book about lighting and I was having lunch at a burger place called, P.Terry's, here in Austin. The place was a burger stand with some picnic tables over to one side but no indoor seating. I was there with my friend, Will Van Overbeek, who is wicked smart and one of the very best photographers I've ever met. Right out of college the University of Texas Press published his photo book about the Texas Aggies. The list of people, bands and brands he's photographed is too long to even consider. Anyway, I was telling him that I was thinking about starting a blog to help promote my first book. I asked him for a good name. All the names I'd come up with were crap. Or too obviously self-serving. Or just dumb. He thought about it for maybe two seconds and casually shared The Visual Science Lab. For some reason I just loved the name because it spoke to me about constant experimentation. About a mix of science and art. I asked an agency creative director about doing a logo and I love that too. I've been using the same logo since about 2010. I'm in my 14th years of blogging now. The original reason for the blog: flogging my six books has faded away and now I mostly write about experiences in the ever changing market for both professional photography and the art of it all. Thanks for reading!!!
