Lucy Lumen more or less nails it in her YouTube video about: "Are photographers too serious?" And I agree 100%

my all time, personal favorite photograph.

Technique? Sharpness? Dynamic Range? What's that?

  1. I doubt you need more suggestions about videos to watch but you might enjoy Steve O'Nions (https://www.youtube.com/@SteveONions). He doesn't talk about gear much at all and he even sometimes shoots with the cheapest film bodies and kit lenses that you can find. His photo walks/hikes are fun in a low key understated way. He has been known to use a spot meter though, so you've been warned.

  2. I am more interested in the image than the camera. That said, I am aware that what a camera 'sees' and records is different from what humans see and choose to record, sometimes subtly and sometimes vastly. For that reason I am interested in the 'mechanics' of cameras to the extent that I can make the camera produce the image I want to see. A lot of modern cameras attempt to bypass that need by offering "Modes", presets to produce average examples of particular types of images, portraits, landscapes, etc. Some digital cameras (Fuji's Instax mini for example) go even further and try to emulate things like film, color effects, etc. that are often a part of post production software presets. Even Adobe Lightroom has a whole set of presets, which I devoutly ignore because I am a control freak who prefers to know how things work rather than just slap on a group of settings designed by someone else. I do agree with her attitude of 'to each his own' though. Whatever turns your crank. To paraphrase Duke Ellington, 'if it looks good, it is good', at least for you and that is all that matters.

  3. I also agree pretty much 100%, but it's not something that hasn't been said before, by people like....you. One thing I found amusing was her mystification about why only 11 percent of her viewers were women, and 89% were men. Think it could have anything to do with the fact that she's also a model and is both extremely cute and engaging?

    1. Cute? Really? I will admit that I like her accent and delivery. It's light and fun.

    2. It's all in the eye of the beholder, just like art. As far as street photography goes we will never see the opportunities that street photographers had in the 40's to 60's again. People today are more guarded, dress boringly and are obese. Plus the streets are more crowded with mindless dull eyed souls marching to their next meeting. Street portraiture might still be interesting to some. Personally I'd rather take photos of people reflected in puddles. That's why they make chocolate and vanilla ice cream.
