Healthy Lunch.

I've really enjoyed photographing food lately. The new cameras hold onto such incredible detail in the highlight areas when shooting raw. The LED lights provide a great light source for food. You can see what you are doing and you can work without the heat of tungsten or the one step removed from reality reality of flash. On the last several shoots I've found the longer zoom lens in my collection to be the most flexible.

I love the look of clean, white plates on white tablecloths.

So Kirk, why don't you show us some photos of great Texas barbeque? I realize that it's not normally served on clean white plates, and on white tableclothes, though. ;-)

'cause barbeque is butt-ugly in photographs. Although I'm thinking that Kirk could figure out a way to pretty it up. Maybe place a bottle of Lone Star Beer in front of it would do the trick...

Racecar, I have absolutely no doubt that if anyone can do it, Kirk is the guy. I was hoping to lure him into doing it, in hopes that he might give us some valuable insight as to how it's done...

This makes me hungry, and I'm a beef and chicken kind of guy.

Kirk, I want to really thank you for showing us what can be done with LEDs. I've switched almost entirely to them for my portrait work, using a combo of the Fotodiox panels you recommend and some homemade fixtures. The immediacy, the truly WYSIWIG nature of the light, and the calmer, quieter tone make an enormous difference for the type of work I like to do.

Looks pretty good to me, although maybe I'd like to see a touch more in focus. But that's something I struggle with in my food photography as well.

Yup.

Jessica. I agree. But that's what makes being an artist fun. If we needed it to be the same every time we'd be working in a factory.

In a twist - some restaurants are now starting to ban food photography, citing interruptions and disruption of the ambiance: http://wcbsfm.cbslocal.com/2013/02/05/manhattan-restaurants-banning-you-from-taking-photos-of-food/

This can also mean that for high end places, at least, food photography will return to the hands of the professionals...

Sounds good to me.
