Austin likes to call itself the "Live Music Capitol." We get a lot of musicians, bands, performers through the city on a extremely regular basis and there's well over 100 venues for live music every night of the week. So, if you've been a photographer in Austin long enough you've probably done some concert shots or performance shots. I know I have done my share.... Here's a small selection from my collection....

Thes are Great! Now that you are doing a few photo workshops/tours, i think you should considder NOLA.
Great pictures. Did you go to these concerts for work or pleasure?
Mark this day in history: a photographer has managed to pull actual human skin tones out of that overwhelming bath of blue and red light which usually turns all musicians purple or pink.
Hi David Maxwell, Most were done for work but all were done for pleasure... :-)
David Kay, I've shot a lot in NOLA and it's tough. No one wants you to intrude on their biz. I respect that, to a certain degree.
MM, Thanks! I hate the multi-color face rock shot....
Do you shoot other than rock concerts?
I find that musicians (brass, reeds, etc.) seem to close their eyes a lot.
Sometimes that works, sometimes not. But there's a lot more to shoot other
than a row of guitars!
Tom, I sometimes shoot classical pianist, Anton Nel, traditional symphonic orchestra, etc. but it's not as challenging as stage shows because the light never changes. The one continuous challenge in most classical music venues is the lower light levels.
I love it all. And yes, I'll happily sit through most opera.
These are good photos. My favourites are the ones where the singers' faces are least obstructed by microphones. Having photographed singers in similar circumstances I know those kind of shots can be tough to get. The singers will position themselves where they do, and you have to take the photos you can get. I will also repeat what has been mentioned in an earlier comment - the colour in your photos is amazing, especially considering the multicoloured light sources. Thanks for showing us your photos - it helps motivate us to keep taking photos and keep improving our work.
Pretty bad ass for a commercial shooter. Even nicer for an "older" photographer.
Aw shit, I didn't know there was an age limit on this stuff....
Very nice performance photos!
By the way, yesterday a friend sent me a funny, new Keep Austin Weird meme. :-) I guess there is no way to post it here though.
I love going to gigs and have occasionally taken photos for my promoter buddies. Always challenging to get good ones. You've done a great job!
I was then playing name that band/artist...
I can see Martha wainwright, regina spektor and the Ting tings.
Which performances stuck in your mind(ears)?
Mark
The more I look, the more I like. These are wildly superior images compared to most done on this subject. In particular, the several shots which empasize the diagonal parallel arrangement of performers' stance, their instruments, and onstage equipment like mic stands. It took a minute or so of thinking about just what was holding my attention to #11...the wide shot....when the components all snapped into place.
