I think my favorite skill for portraiture is to slow down and connect with my subject in some way that transcends the process of photographing.

In reference to this post and the previous one, I think continuous light may be one reason your portraits are so effective. Flash (even with modeling lights) really doesn't allow you to play with light. I know lots of great portraits were taken by people who had so internalized the effects of flash that they could probably visualize final effects, but I prefer actuality to visualization.
