Do you make photographs of people with wide angle lenses? We can cure that shortcoming. Buy a fast 85mm lens and feel the enlightenment surge through your entire system. Breathe. Then slightly compress your subjects.

Hi Kirk,
This is a lovely and interesting picture (two different attributes in my mind). The pipes over the people's heads adds atmosphere that might be lacking if the shot was more tightly cropped. I look at it and wonder what the woman is thinking. I wonder about the other people in the picture. Are they discussing Sartre, the Bears Packers point spread, or... I want to be in Paris.
I have been thinking about lenses that are slightly longer than 50mm that give that little extra zing without being so long that you feel yourself backing into walls trying to get everything you want into the picture. This is why I have an unhealthy distaste for a 135mm lens. You need a lens like this one to fill in the gap between 35mm and 135mm :-).

As a practical matter (keeping the wife happy), I'm restricted to a single system. I eye the PanaLeica Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2 for the µ4/3 cameras. Yes, only an 85mm f/2.4 DOF equivalent, but that DOF control is what we knowingly relinquish when moving down the sensor size ladder. Still, the lens is a reference lens for the system, and having an 85mm f/2.4 DOF equiv lens is still intriguing.
Then Fuji 56mm f/1.2. Then Canon 85mm f/1.2; the lenses up the ladder from µ4/3.
Yes, in the end, there is nothing like the "full frame" that we all grew up with. I long to return. Maybe someday.

I just bought a refurbished D7100 and a used 60mm f/2.8D Micro Nikkor. I was tempted by the manual focus Voigtlander 58mm f/1.4, but went with the Nikkor for the 1:1 macro capability. I'm hoping to have everything in my sweaty little hands before the end of the week.
I probably still will add the Voigtlander, but I could only spring for one lens right now. My next lens probably will be a 28mm f/2.8, either Nikon or Voigtlander (both manual focus), since 28mm is the normal focal length on DX format.
I might have gone FF with a D700, mostly for lens selection (e.g., 135mm f/2.8 Ai-S Nikkor), but I have kids and video is more useful than I care to admit.
