This is similar to advice given me by a Calculus professor in my first semester of university - "If you want to learn Calculus you need to get your hands dirty.", meaning study Calculus examples and do as many Calculus exercises as you can. The advice you gave in that "older" column is very relevant today, and will be long into the future.
